Rerun: Could The Ultimate Fashion Accessory Be Free?

Editor’s Note: I’ll periodically “rerun” older posts (generally ones I think will evoke discussion) for the benefit of newer visitors to the site
I work in a pretty large metropolitan city (Boston). On my short 5 minute walk from the train station to my office building I see all different kinds of people, each with their own unique style (or lack thereof). It’s a regular smorgasboard of every designer, store and Salvation Army imaginable. I see one thing over and over again though. One accessory that seems to transcend the trends, personal styles and classes. The most amazing thing… it’s free! What am I talking about?

I see more women totting around Victoria’s Secret bags than I can believe. I feel like I’m playing Where’s Waldo at times, except there’s a 1,000 Waldos and he’s two shades of pink instead of red, white and blue. A quick search on Flickr of “Victoria Secret bag” yields 165 results, 165 different pictures of a shopping bag!
So it’s obvious that this is not an isolated geographic thing and I’m not imagining things. So what is it that makes this bag so special? I can tell you I can’t remember the last time I saw someone carrying around a Macy’s bag or a Filenes bag. Does Victoria’s Secret make super strong bags? Do they give you enhanced organizational abilities? Do you shop at Victoria’s Secret everyday and thus have 500 of their bags lying around? Or is it something else? I know from a guy’s perspective the sight of a Victoria’s Secret bag always brings about uncontrollable connotations with it (sometimes good, sometimes bad). Almost like when you’re a kid waking up on Christmas morning, you get this strong curiosity to know what is in that bag exactly. Do women know this? Is that the reaction women are looking for and the sole reason they use it as a lunch box every day? You tell me as I would really love to know. Throw a comment in the post (ladies’ opinions would be especially appreciated) and please help me put this great mystery to rest.

I’m all for reusing and recylcling, however it’s obvious these girls do it for the attention. Carrying your lunch to WORK in a bag that once carried your crouchless panties…. Tacky.

I had no idea that I was missing out on this trend. I do re-use and recycle, but am too embarrassed to use a Victoia Secret’s bag out in public.
I am still a brown bag type of gal.
( I recycle VS bags as trash bags)

I do know that Victoria’s Secret donated ALOT of their bags to my Dr’s office. May have been a local thing, or charity thing.
Now imagine it’s not their lunch … it’s their stool sample? *EEK*

I’ve NEVER seen this. Of course, our closest V.S. is over an hour away.

This is a great idea for attention defiscate females.
Personally I wouldn’t be comfortable attracting the unwanted attention and possibly arousing sexual desire in perfectly strange males. That’s a good way to be marked as a viable victim for some sicko.
