Review: JimiX Wallet

First off, let me say that I love the idea of a slim front pocket wallet. I hate having a bulky wallet in my back pocket, so my compromise to this point has been to have a bulky wallet in my front pocket. So the concept of the JimiX wallet was very appealing to me.
The JimiX is available in 4 colors (blue, clear, safety orange and stealth) and made of pretty durable plastic. One thing I noticed on my “stealth” color unit however was it’s propensity to stratch very easily as evidenced by the pictures. It may just have been the black color shows stratches more noticeably though. The JimiX wallet can be considered an extension of the original Jimi wallet. One of the main complaints of the original Jimi was that it’s capacity to carry bills was too limited and unless you were rolling with hundies, it could a real hindrance. Taking that feedback to heart the JimiX is basically the Jimi in everyway except the money clip has been moved from the inside to the outside.

This accomplished two things, first you no longer have to fold your bills twice like you had to with the original Jimi to get them to fit inside the case. The money being on the outside, allows you to only have to fold your bills once (the width of the bills matches almost exactly the width of the wallet). You can also fit a lot more bills with the money clip on the outside as you are not constrained with the limitations of fitting your money inside the case. Another plus is you can use the clip to attach the JimiX to a belt or article of clothing (which could be particularly useful if you bring this to the gym).

The inside of the case has a card holder on one side which is capable of holding up to 4 credit card size cards. The other side unfortunately is largely unused. It is simply the back side of the money clip. With a wallet this small and compact I think it’s vital to maximize all the available space. I would have loved to have another card holder on that side, increasing the capacity from 4 to 8 cards. For myself, being limited to only 4 cards in my wallet is a little tight. If you figure you carry your license, an ATM card and a major credit card you only have one space left to pick between your health insurance card, a second credit card or any other card you may need to have on your person on a daily basis. You could place a couple of cards in the “empty” space on the other side of the wallet, but you would constantly run the risk of them falling out whenever you open the wallet.
So is this the ultimate wallet? It depends on what your needs are and what your definition of “vital” is. If you’re someone that does not carry a lot of cash and most of your purchases are done via an ATM/debit card or one main credit card than this is probably an excellent solution for you. If you’re someone that likes to have 3 or 4 different credit cards on them to use for different “rewards” programs and a bunch of other cards (movie clubs, membership cards) and plenty of cash, then this is probably too limiting for you. Even for those people though, I could still see the benefits of having a little Jimi in your life. For going to the gym or jogging, when you don’t need a full complement of cards and a lot of cash and would rather have something small, compact and tough (as well as splashproof) the JimiX is a perfect solution.
Although I could not see myself using this as my everyday wallet, I would still buy a JimiX for the exact situation mentioned above. To be liberated from my bulky “George Costanza-esque” wallet, even for just an hour at the gym, is well worth the $15.95.

If you wear your pants too loose, it may be a pick pockets dream. ;P
